17th Sunday in Ordinary Time

- Word of Explanation :

In concluding his discourse in parables, Jesus praises the scribe who has become a disciple of the Kingdom of Heaven. The scribe, an expert in Scripture, plays a role of communication and interpretation. Jesus’ teaching, which reveals the Kingdom of Heaven, is new. In one fell swoop, He has snatched the Holy Book from the power of the scribes, from the power of those who want to enclose it a web of commentaries that paralyze all liberty of interpretation.
Blessed the one who is instructed but remains open to what is new !

- Meditation :

(c) Jean François KiefferIn the parables particular to Matthew, Jesus tells of the Kingdom and its destiny. The parables of the hidden treasure and the pearl of great price underline the great value of the Kingdom and the need to seize the occasion to acquire it definitively. The Kingdom requires a total commitment from those who seek it, a readiness to pay the price of any sacrifice. The parable of the net and its interpretation puts off to the end of time the separation of the good from the bad in the Kingdom. All these parables have for aim to allow one to see as a mystery the paradoxical way of God in establishing the Kingdom : the nearness of God is a gift beyond price, which is offered to all. But it is a gift that is not imposed : one has to choose to receive it. The one who has heard the good news of the Kingdom and received the grace to discover the pearl and the treasure is the one who will be found inexcusable for not having acted in consequence. This is why Jesus praises the cultivated scribe who knew how to open himself to the new. He discerned in the person of Jesus the one who fulfills the Scriptures.
The scribe is the one who has received the tradition and passes it on. Thus the “scribe become a disciple of the Kingdom of Heaven” is the one who welcomed the mission of teaching others about the riches received. The parable of the "scribe become disciple" is addressed to each one of us as an invitation to assume the responsibility of making known the revelation concerning the closeness of God. Is it possible that the encounter with Christ has transformed our lives without our wanting to share the grace received ? Our entire life should be a parable for our brothers and sisters, along with the assurance that Christ is with us.
